Ironically, General Motors held on to first place thanks to Asia.
GM topped No. 2 Toyota Motor Corp. by just 261,805 vehicles, about one assembly plant's output. GM's lead was the result of its Korean unit and its success in China.
The final tally showed GM's global sales at 8,381,805, up 6.5 percent. Toyota had 8,120,000, up 8.1 percent. Toyota had the largest absolute increase in units
sold - 610,000 - but it wasn't enough to move it into the top spot.
China's surging market helped to give GM the edge. Sales of vehicles badged with one of GM's brands in China totaled 351,742 in 2005. Sales of vehicles badged with one of Toyota's brands in China totaled 145,687. The difference: 206,055, advantage GM.
